Pedestal Vanities - Victorian Charm for Your
Bath
Through the
years, pedestal vanities fell out of favor with
homeowners and decorators alike. Today,
with many restoring older homes and those just
wanting the Victorian look, pedestal vanities
are making a comeback.
The
Victorian look is easy to achieve by simply
adding a few touches to a pedestal vanity. The
first addition would have to be faucets and
handles. While restored hardware can be
purchased for hefty prices, new reproductions
can be found for a fraction of the cost. Ideal
hardware would be brass plated with porcelain
handles.
A clear glass or plain wooden shelf can be
attached to the wall above the vanity to store
those must have items such as soap, toothbrushes
and water cups. Brass hooks can be mounted
beside the vanity for hand towels or other
hanging items.
To finish the look, adding a white lace curtain
around the base of the pedestal. The easiest way
to do this is with sheer, lace curtain material
and adhesive Velcro. This makes the skirt
effortless to remove and wash when soiled.
To make the curtain, measure the distance from
the floor to the middle of the outside rim of
the pedestal vanity. Add two inches to allow for
hems in the material. If needed, join several
sections of material together to fit the width
needed to completely circle the pedestal vanity.
Be sure to allow material for pleating when you
add the Velcro.
Once you have the desired size hemmed and side
seamed, it is time to add the Velcro. Measure a
strip of half inch Velcro to fit the entire
exposed rim of the vanity. Using pins, gather
the material and begin pinning the lace at the
top seam to the softer half of the Velcro
fastener. When the lace and Velcro are attached,
by the pins, begin sewing from one end to the
other, doing one side of the fastener and then
again on the other side.
Remove the adhesive backing from the rough part
of the Velcro and attach it to the vanity. Allow
at least a couple of hours for the adhesive to
adhere to the vanity rim. Now add your curtain
and you will see the instant Victorian look you
have created.
