Creating a Retreat Atmosphere with Your Bathroom Vanity

Homeowners lucky enough to have their own en suite bath can take the room from one of function to one of style and relaxation with only a few simple changes.

Turning your bathroom into a personal retreat doesn’t have to take a lot of money or time, but of course, allotting a reasonable budget for both does help.

You may not be able to afford an entire bath renovation, including the installation of a relaxing soaker, whirlpool or massage tub – most often associated with spa-like excursions, but you will be surprised at what you can do to soften your bath – especially the bathroom vanity area – with the addition of well-chosen paint, molding, fixtures and accessories.

For example, if you are living in a brand new builder’s white house, consider the feeling you want to have when you enter the bath: restful, soothing, no stress. Paint the walls a soft, relaxing tone – maybe a soft bluish green that evokes memories of the beach. Adding color to the walls will also make your white toilet, tub and sink pop.

Next, look at the sink and bathroom vanity. Do you have a pedestal sink or a traditional built-in bathroom vanity? Either way, you can accentuate the features that will enhance your bath’s retreat personality. Consider replacing the sink with a new above-counter model that looks like a freestanding bowl, or perhaps a sleek under-mounted bowl. If you don’t want to take such drastic action, look at the style of fixtures you have, and replace standard issue ones with something polished and modern, or perhaps with a more vintage flair. Installing new cabinet pulls is also a great way to refresh a bathroom vanity, as is adding stenciled or freehand design to cabinets, walls and around mirrors.

Mirrors and flattering lighting are very important to creating the retreat style of your bathroom. As the focal point of many bathroom vanities, the mirror is often large but unadorned. Think about adding a frame to your existing mirror, or replacing a large, rectangular mirror with two smaller ovals with ornate frames. Updating the surrounding lighting is as easy as hiring an electrician, and might include adding wall sconces with stylish shades.

Accessories are what give a designer bathroom retreat its finish. There is a big different between accessories and clutter. Hide any unattractive items such as deodorant away in a cabinet, or in baskets with lids. Cotton balls and q-tips look great in apothecary jars, and towels can be rolled and put on display. Remember that accessorizing your bathroom vanity is like decorating any other room in the house: choose a few beloved items, such as photographs or art pieces, and work around them to create a pleasing display rather than a collection of junk.
