Small Bathroom Vanity Considerations

Professional bathroom designers, working with builders and contractors, can help customers get the most out of all available space.

A pedestal sink isn’t the only option for a smaller bathroom!

Vanities as small as 31 inches long by 21 inches wide can still accommodate a usable 16 inch sink bowl and provide counter space for a couple of glasses and bottles. (Customers can find smaller vanities, but sink bowl size may also be reduced.)

Even though there isn’t space on top of the vanity for many grooming supplies, there are ways to make the small bathroom meet individual needs. For example, towel racks are a necessity. Shelves can keep rarely used items out of the way. Organizers that go over the bathroom door can provide hanging space or extra storage. But, for day to day essentials, the drawers of a small vanity are the most important feature to consider.

Many smaller vanities utilize the area around the sink pipes as the main storage area. However, because of those pipes, there is no room for drawers to push back. Therefore, depending on the placement of the pipes, a drawer may be “fake”; from the front it appears to be a regular drawer-even having hardware-but it isn’t a real drawer and therefore won’t open. (However, it is a good idea to have this false front nailed, not just glued, to prevent inadvertent tugging and damage.) Fewer but larger drawers offer greater optimization. Creative and inexpensive organizers can be used to store smaller items in the larger or deeper drawers, or in the main storage area near the pipes.

Any container that is sturdy and fairly shallow makes a good drawer organizer. Some choices may be smaller boxes, paper cups of all sizes, plastic food containers, and silverware or sewing organizers. They can be mixed and matched to hold every size of cosmetic, medication, hair accessory or whatever needs to be close at hand, but out of sight. There may not be room for a bucket under the pipes, but there can still be room for rags and a bottle of cleaner!

After trying different arrangements in the available drawers, a small vanity user will find that they can manage surprisingly well. By shopping around for a vanity that has attractive cabinetry, countertops, fixtures and hardware, a customer will realize that having a small vanity doesn’t mean having to sacrifice beauty or usefulness!
